Pugwash Pledge Sample Text

Each person taking the Pledge can submit their own customized text. The following is what we suggest, which can be amended and edited or replaced entirely.

WHEREAS research and development in science and technology can greatly contribute to the betterment of humanity, or do it substantial harm;

UNDERSTANDING degradation of the environment is causing significant damage to Earth’s ecosystems, including human civilization, and must be addressed, ameliorated, and ultimately reversed;

APPRECIATING that human rights internationally are dependent upon peace, collective security, equitable use of resources, and a continued ban on the use of weapons of mass destruction;

AND RECOGNIZING there are significant forces in the global community whose actions promulgate further harms for short-term gain, requiring us all to do better:

I RESOLVE to always keep ethical thinking foremost in my considerations of my words and actions. I will undertake no projects and support no activities whose harms outweigh their benefits, and I will give full consideration to both throughout my work. I will stay informed about future developments in science, technology, and international security to be a resource to my peers. This I pledge in my career, as a member of my communities, and as a citizen of my nation.
